Test each axis separately as below to verify proper operation.

NOTE--The loads MUST be disconnected from the motors in order to proceed! It is safest to power only one motor at a time during these tests. Be prepared for some instability in the system, especially if the motor has not been tuned to the axis.

  • Make sure the brake is unplugged and manually dis-engaged

  • Rotate the motor locally at the drive. Using either the MAX utility (Interactive section--single axis) or the FourAxis motion control software, verify that the direction of rotation matches the selected direction. You may need to swap encoder (or possible motor) leads to get these to match.
NOTE--these directions must match or the axis will run away or error out under remote operation.

  • If safe, spin the motor at top speed. Note the velocity readout in MAX 1d interactive. Save this value for input later into the controller setup panel.

  • Switch the drive to remote operation.

  • Try a small move at a low speed--perhaps 10 or so revolutions of the motor shaft at one-tenth speed. Note whether the motion is smooth and how precisely position is controlled.

  •  Most likely some additional tuning will be needed.
